151215 - Early Ups - Tom-21

Well, here we have it! The first powder day of the season!  After receiving 6” overnight followed by continuous snowfall throughout the day totaling up to 16", legs were burning and skis were turnin’ as skiers and riders got their first deep snow experience of the year.

The one type of alarm I could never hit snooze on…Powder Alerts. I receive several from Skimail, SkiUtah, and Onthesnow.com. This morning, my phone would not stop buzzing as powder notifications were triggering off all over Park City Area. I knew I had to get to the mountain ASAP.  After a brief coffee and a donut, I hopped on the Park City Transit and headed to the Park City Base Area for what would be my first powder turns of the year.  At the base of the PayDay Express, I quickly met up with a group of friends and was able to hop on one of the first chairs.  Riding up we saw Treasure Hollow with only a single track cut through the snow and were tempted to hit it on our first chair, however we decided to head to Bonanza Express and head to the higher elevation. I was surprised to see that most of the runs still had all the snow on them.  It seems the Groomer’s groomed early last night before the snow fell, allowing for plenty of powder shots today.

With our first run, we headed to Assessment to ski down to the new Miners Camp/Quicksilver Gondola Junction.  As one of the first on the trail and snow still nuking down on the mountain, I quickly estimated that there was at least 10” on the trail. I bundled up my coat, threw my hood up and prepared for my first face shots of the year.  With a face full of snow at the bottom of the run, I was tempted to stop in the beautiful brand new Miners Camp lodge for a hot cocoa, but who’s kidding who...It was our first Pow Day.

Back in the office and now filled up with plenty of hot cocoa, I’m excited to see what the day brings. Park City is under a Winter Storm Warning until Tuesday evening with snow showers gracing the area throughout the week.
