Traveler's Guide to Spring Skiing at Park City

As the day's become longer and the sun becomes stronger, the skiing only gets better. From a local's perspective, spring is the best time of year! Over 100 perfectly groomed trails await us each morning and the sun warms us up quickly as we head for the first chair. Don't get me wrong, it still snows in Utah during the spring and you can always count on 2-5 monster snowstorms (15"+) in the spring, however what differs these storms from our typical winter storms is that the next day, it will be back up to 55 degrees and you'll be skiing powder in a t-shirt underneath a bluebird sky.

Aside from the amazing conditions that are present in the spring, I think there is also something to be said about our community.  The busy season is over and our town loves to celebrate the ski season with a laidback, relaxed vibe all across Park City. Knowing the days on the mountain are coming to an end (Closing Date April, 10th), we make the most out of each day on the hill and also know how to do it right after years of practice. Here are a few tips to help you get the most of your spring visit.

1. Follow the sun
There is a freeze-melt process that is very common during the spring. The sun warms the snow, then at night the snow refreezes.  To get the best snow, hit the trails with the most sun on them in the morning. The groomer's will be soft and smooth. Due to our geographical location, most of these runs will be Southwest facing in the morning hours. Be prepared for changing snow surfaces throughout the day. Another great way to get the most out of our mountain is with a private guide. Think about it, 7,300 skiable acres. If this is your first time here, you may want to consider a guide to bring you to the goods. Guides are available through booking a private lesson with our ski school.

2. Hydrate
Most people love a drink or two on vacation, but the problem is, it's not usually water! Many people forget about staying hydrated in the high alpine environment. The sun and dry mountain air will quickly suck the moisture out of you. Drink plenty of water or delicious Gatorade before, during and after your visit.

3. Spring Events
Park City hosts some legendary spring events and celebrations such as the 9th annual Spring Gruv, a 16-day festival from March 12th to 27th celebrating the ski season with Utah's only Pond Skimming Contest. There is also live music every day in the Base Areas, which always is a rockin' time. This festival is fun for the whole family with plenty of activities for the little ones, such as Meet The Avalanche Dogs, Snow Play, S'mores and more!

The Utah sun is very, very powerful to begin with. Put yourself up at 10,000ft and those UV rays intensify dramatically. All it takes is one run without applying sunscreen and you'll be looking like a raccoon for the next 5 days because of your google or sunglass tan line. Lather up with some Sunscreen to prevent skin damage. Our favorite is the Oil-Free Everyday Sunscreen from Supergoop! Don't forget to reapply.

5. Embrace the culture
During the spring, you'll see some wild things and to be honest thats what Park City is all about!  Costumes on the mountain, people skiing in bathing suits, etc. Don't be afraid personalize your outfit on the hill the way you deem fit. We encourage creativity and we're all looking for a good chuckle.
